New High Court judges appointed

The Prime Minister has announced the appointment of two new judges to the High Court of Australia. Both appointments come from the Federal Court.

The Hon Justice Simon Steward ➤ (from Melbourne) will replace the Hon Justice Geoffrey Nettle AC, who retired on 30 November 2020 (commencing 1 December 2020). Justice Steward’s expertise has been in tax law. His Honour is currently a Deputy President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

The Hon Justice Jacqueline Gleeson (from Sydney) will replace the Hon Justice Virginia Bell AC upon her retirement on 28 February 2021 (commencing 1 March 2021). Justice Gleeson has experience working as a barrister and solicitor in competition and consumer law and presided over the ACCC v Air NZ penalty decision.
